HASHTAGS

There are many kinds of tags to keep track of. On Instagram, their primary function is to link out from a post to a Feed or to Stories, and to add an extra layer of information to the post.

  • You can add up to 30 hashtags to a post in the Feed.

  • Provided that the profile is public, the photo will then end up on the aggregated feed of the hashtags used, which are also searchable.

  • If your post engages many other users, it may even end up among the nine top posts that appear at the top of a search for the tag.

  • You can follow a hashtag in the same way as you follow a profile, which means that you can get posts under this hashtag in your Feed.

  • As the follower of a hashtag, you can mark that you want less of this kind of post. This is worth considering when you are the one creating the posts.

  • It is possible to share posts by sending them as DM – or by tagging people you want to see the post in the comments field. A lot of name tags in comments is not a bad thing, but it may be worth taking a look at where they are shared and why.

  • If you use the same kinds of hashtags in every post, this may result in Instagram believing that you are posting spam which will impact how visible your posts will be.

  • If you geotag your posts, they will become part of the location’s Feed.
Using a tag can help you reach your audience. Looking at what is published under a tag can help you to understand it.

WHICH HASHTAGS SHOULD YOU USE?

There is a whole science to this but in general we can say: Not too many. Not too commonplace. Not too rare. They should describe and be relevant to Swedish Radio, your account, your content and your audience.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Hashtags can be banned in some instances. #Kansas was used for too many posts, which breached Instagram’s rules and subsequently the tag was banned and it became impossible to do a search based on it.
